Make: Greenhouse Grow Cups

Make your own miniature greenhouse in a cup! Then day-by-day observe as your seeds transform to a sprout and then a seedling!

Materials:
– clear plastic cups (2 per wowzer)
– a pushpin
– potting soil
– seeds (choose something quick growing)
– water

Wow To:

  1. Using a pushpin, poke several holes into the bottom of one of your cups. These holes will serve as drainage holes to prevent overwatering.
  2. Fill the cup with potting soil, leaving about an inch or two at the top and gently pat the soil down.
  3. Carefully plant 3-6 seeds in soil, making sure to leave space between each one.
  4. Cover seeds with an additional scoop of soil and once again, pat it down gently.
  5. Lightly water your grow cup.
  6. Now place the second cup on top to form the greenhouse (fit it inside the bottom cup or tape them together). This locks in the moisture and warmth, allowing your seeds to germinate quickly, while still allowing you to see what’s going on inside.
  7. Place your greenhouse grow cups near a window that gets lots of light. Water your seedling a little bit (be careful not to over water) every day or two and it won’t be long before you see some sprouts popping up.
  8. Once you have a seedling it can then be transplanted to a pot or a garden.
